Parenting a child with a disability presents its own unique challenges and joys. Often it is difficult to relate and share with parents who are navigating sports and good grades rather than IEP’s, medical funding, and therapies. Many local programs are run that either have a ‘sensory’ time that quickly books up or are not tailored at all to the needs some families have.
Pastor Jesse and his wife, Nicole, are parents of two children with a disability and the church has received a grant to support the following programs:
- Community family programs that provide a nurturing environment for parents and children to gather and enjoy crafts, games, food, and a positive space to converse, play, and enjoy. These programs are scheduled every few months.
- A teen social group that meets monthly to provide teens the opportunity to develop healthy friendships, be encouraged in a world that is often not inclusive to those with a disability, and grow to be an inspirational community. Teens with a disability or special healthcare needs, along with siblings and friends, are invited to participate in activities such as games, cooking, crafting, movies, and other programs throughout the year.
- Parent support group in which parents facing similar joys and challenges can gather in a safe space to share, listen, encourage, support, and share resources. The parent group meets once or twice a month on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM.
